Research Interests & Goals
I am fascinated with understanding how animals adapt to seasonal variations in temperate environments. For my doctoral thesis I am attempting to understand, through observation and experimentation, what ecological factors determine individual migratory strategies in a partial migrant population of European blackbirds (partial migrant populations contain both migratory and sedentary individuals) and what life history tradeoffs accompany these extremely different strategies. By identifying the proximate environmental cues for individual annual movement behavior and the tradeoffs made to migrate or remain sedentary, we will gain a greater understanding of selective pressures favoring the evolution of both migratory and sedentary life histories.
